A Hamlet Below the Col du Chaussy
Montpascal is a mountain hamlet of La Tour-en-Maurienne, formerly part of the commune of Pontamafrey-Montpascal. It sits at around 1,350 metres on a high shelf above the Maurienne valley, just below the Col du Chaussy pass, and is one of the valley's balcony villages.
Meadows and Spruce Forest
The camera looks across sloping meadows scattered with broadleaf trees and isolated conifers, towards a dense spruce forest that rises up the mountainside. These alpine pastures are the traditional hay meadows and grazing land that shape the landscape of the Maurienne's high hamlets.
A Volunteer Snow and Weather Watch
The webcam is run by the volunteer association #MauriennisezVous, which also operates the Col du Chaussy and Jarrier cameras. It is a handy check on snow cover and mountain conditions before heading up to the Espace Nordique du Grand Coin, the cross-country ski and hiking area at the pass.
