A Village Balcony Above Saint-Jean
The camera stands in the chef-lieu, the main village of Jarrier, a small commune clinging to the slopes above Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. From around 1,000 metres it frames a sweeping view along the valley, with conifers at the edge of the picture and ridge after ridge receding towards the high peaks.
The Maurienne, a Gateway to Italy
The Maurienne is the long valley of the Arc river in Savoie and one of the great routes across the Alps: the A43 motorway and the railway on the valley floor lead to the Frรฉjus tunnels and on to Italy. Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the valley's historic capital, is known for its cathedral and for the Opinel museum, devoted to the famous local folding knife.
A Volunteer Webcam Network
The camera is part of the network built by the volunteer association #MauriennisezVous, which also runs the Col du Chaussy and Montpascal webcams, with weather readings supplied by Mรฉtรฉo en Maurienne. It is a handy way to check snow cover and mountain conditions before heading up the valley.
