Cookie Policy
Understanding how we use cookies to improve your experience.
Our Commitment to Transparency
We believe in being completely transparent about how we use cookies and similar technologies on our website. This policy complies with the latest AEPD guidelines effective January 2024.
Which rule applies to you
Cookie rules differ by country, so we apply the rule of the place you are browsing from rather than one blurred worldwide statement. The paragraph below is the one that applies to you.
No optional cookie is set until you consent. You can withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it, from the Manage cookies link in the footer.

Because you are browsing from a region where this is permitted (currently the United States), analytics, preference and advertising cookies are set by default. You can turn them off at any time from the Manage cookies link in the footer, and we honour the Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signal automatically.
Your right to object. Where we set analytics and advertising cookies, we do so on the basis of our legitimate interests: understanding how the site is used, and funding it through advertising. You can object at any time. For advertising we always act on your objection without weighing it against our own interests โ use Manage cookies in the footer, or send the Global Privacy Control signal from your browser.
Your browser is sending a Global Privacy Control signal, so these cookies have been switched off for you and nothing optional has been set. You can still change this from Manage cookies at any time.
Your browser is sending a Global Privacy Control signal, so we have switched your advertising cookies off. We act on that objection for advertising without weighing it against our own interests. The other choices you made yourself are unchanged โ you can review them from Manage cookies at any time.
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently and provide information to website owners.
Simple Analogy
Think of cookies like a name tag at a conference - they help the website remember who you are and your preferences when you return.
Types of Cookies We Use
We use different types of cookies for various purposes. Here's a breakdown of each type and how we use them:
Essential Cookies
Always ActiveThese cookies are necessary for the website to function properly and cannot be disabled. They are exempt from consent requirements under AEPD guidelines.
- Language preferences and localization settings
- User session management and authentication
- Security features and fraud prevention
- Server load balancing for optimal performance
Preference Cookies
OptionalThese cookies support interactive features you choose to use. Today this category covers the interactive maps: when a map is provided by Google, loading it sets cookies on Google's own domain.
- Interactive maps on webcam and map pages
- Map view settings while you browse
- Loaded from Google only after you allow it
Analytics Cookies
OptionalThese cookies let us analyze website traffic and understand how the site is used, so we can improve it. Whether they are set before you choose depends on where you are browsing from โ see the rule for your location above. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time.
- Visitor behavior patterns and user journeys
- Most popular content and features
- Traffic sources and referral information
Advertising Cookies
OptionalThese cookies are used to deliver relevant advertisements and measure advertising effectiveness.
- Delivery of relevant advertisements
- Control of advertisement frequency
- Measurement of advertising effectiveness
Cookies and stored items we use
The complete list of what we store on your device, what it is for, and how long it lasts.
| Cookie / item | Category | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
geowebcams_cookie_consent (local storage) | Essential Cookies | GeoWebcams | Stores your consent choice | 365 days |
theme | Essential Cookies | GeoWebcams | The light/dark theme you selected | 1 year |
user_preferred_language | Essential Cookies | GeoWebcams | The language you selected | 1 year |
unit_system (local storage) | Essential Cookies | GeoWebcams | The metric/imperial preference you selected | Until you clear it |
disable | Essential Cookies | GeoWebcams | Records an analytics opt-out | 24 months |
_ga, _ga_* | Analytics Cookies | GA4 usage measurement | 2 years | |
NID, CONSENT, 1P_JAR | Preference Cookies | Interactive maps (Google Maps JavaScript API) | Up to 2 years | |
__gads, __gpi, __eoi, _gcl_* | Advertising Cookies | Ad delivery, frequency capping and conversion measurementOnly when advertising is enabled โ it is off today | Up to 13 months | |
| Umami | โ | GeoWebcams | Cookieless audience measurement โ nothing is stored on your device | No storage |
Three items are stored only because you asked for them: your light/dark theme, your chosen language, and your metric/imperial unit preference. They are set as a direct result of your own action, are used solely to render the interface you asked for, and are never shared with anyone โ so they are treated as necessary and are not subject to consent.
Our primary audience measurement is Umami, which we host ourselves. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, so under the AEPD position on audience measurement it needs no consent and runs regardless of your choices.
Third-Party Cookies
We also use cookies from trusted third-party services to enhance functionality and provide better user experience:
Google Analytics
Website analytics and user behavior tracking, only with your consent
Google AdSense
Advertising delivery and revenue optimization
Social Media
Social media integration and sharing features
Advertising opt-outs and partner controls
Google is the only advertising and analytics recipient today. You can review its privacy policy and use its own controls to opt out independently of the choices you make here:
One honest limitation: withdrawing consent stops further loads, but cookies already stored on a third party's own domain โ Google Maps' NID, CONSENT and 1P_JAR in particular โ cannot be deleted by this website. They are removed through your browser settings or the third party's own controls, linked above. This is why the important control is not setting them in the first place.
Managing Your Cookie Preferences
You're in Control
You have full control over which cookies you accept. Use the Manage cookies link in the footer at any time โ it is available in every region, whether or not a banner was shown โ or the button below. Your browser settings give you a further, independent layer of control.
Browser Settings
Google Chrome
Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
Mozilla Firefox
Options > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data
Safari
Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
Microsoft Edge
Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Cookies and site data
Cookie Consent
On your first visit you will normally see a cookie banner, compliant with AEPD 2024 guidelines, letting you accept, reject or configure each category. Where the rules of your location allow optional cookies to be switched on by default, the banner is not shown and the Manage cookies link in the footer is your control instead โ it is always available, in every region.
Your Options
- Accept all cookies for the best experience
- Customize your cookie preferences by purpose and provider
- Reject optional cookies (essential only)
Global Privacy Control (GPC)
If your browser or extension sends the Global Privacy Control signal, we honour it automatically: every optional category is switched off, and nothing is set by default even in regions where it otherwise would be. We check the signal both in your browser and on our servers, so it applies even if scripts are blocked. Honouring GPC is a legal requirement in a number of US states, not a courtesy.
