OnlineThis camera overlooks Minehead Station, the western terminus of the West Somerset Railway — England's longest standard-gauge heritage line. The bay platform sits to the left and the main platform to the right, with the distinctive yellow carriage shed and locomotive yard beyond. The Western Terminus of the West Somerset Railway
Minehead is the seaside terminus of the West Somerset Railway, the longest standard-gauge heritage railway in England, running some 23 miles along the Bristol Channel coast to Bishops Lydeard. The camera looks down the platforms toward the buffer stops, capturing arrivals and departures throughout the operating year.
Heritage Locomotives and Rolling Stock
Lovingly preserved steam and diesel locomotives haul rakes of vintage carriages in and out of the bay and main platforms. The yellow carriage shed and adjacent locomotive yard stable the line's working fleet, a paradise for trainspotters and railway photographers.
The Station and Its Setting
The view takes in the full layout of Minehead Station — the bay platform to the left, the main platform to the right, and the run-round loops between. Beyond the tracks, the rooftops of the resort town of Minehead climb toward the wooded slopes of Exmoor National Park.
A Living Piece of Railway History
Reopened by volunteers and now marking fifty years of preservation, the West Somerset Railway is one of Britain's great railway revival success stories. This camera offers a continuous window onto a working heritage line where the golden age of steam is kept very much alive.
