A Volcanic Reef Like No Other

The Laomei Green Reef is a series of volcanic rock ridges formed when lava from the nearby Datun Mountain volcanic group flowed into the sea and cooled. Centuries of pounding waves carved the hardened basalt into parallel grooves and troughs, creating one of Taiwan's most distinctive coastal geological formations.

The Northern Coast Setting

Stretching along the shoreline of Shimen District, the reef lies within the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area. The camera takes in the wide sandy beach, the restless waters of the Taiwan Strait, and the green headlands that define this dramatic edge of northern Taiwan.
