The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is Alabama's premier marine science education and research institution, set on the eastern end of Dauphin Island. The View Across Mobile Bay

The lens reaches across the wide expanse of Mobile Bay, where natural gas platforms rise on the distant horizon. Working shrimp boats and recreational vessels regularly cross the frame, and a curving rock breakwater traces the shoreline below.

A Barrier Island on the Gulf

Dauphin Island is a narrow barrier island guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay where it meets the Gulf of Mexico. Its shifting sands and shallow seagrass flats make it a celebrated stop for migratory birds and a living classroom for coastal ecology.
