Franklin County
Location and Geography
Franklin County covers a mountainous, thinly populated part of western Maine, between the Sandy River valley around Farmington and the border with Québec. Several of Maine's highest summits rise here, among them Sugarloaf Mountain and the Bigelow Range, which the Appalachian Trail crosses.
Notable Features
Sugarloaf, in Carrabassett Valley, is one of the largest ski areas in the eastern United States, and the Narrow Gauge Pathway follows an old railroad bed along the Carrabassett River below it. In the northwest, Rangeley and the Rangeley Lakes are a classic destination for fishing, boating and snowmobiling, and the University of Maine at Farmington anchors the county seat.
Natural Heritage and Conservation
Flagstaff Lake, a reservoir created in 1950 by the Long Falls Dam, covers the former villages of Flagstaff and Dead River, and the Bigelow Preserve, on its southern shore, protects about 14,500 hectares of mountain forest.
