Tunturi-Lappi

A landscape of fells

The name Tunturi-Lappi means "Fell Lapland," and the sub-region lives up to it: treeless, gently domed fells such as those of the Pallas and Ylläs massifs dominate the horizon, with the Levi fell at Kittilä among the best known. Between them lie open bogs, birch heaths and clear rivers that define the far western reaches of Finnish Lapland.

Nature and the seasons

Lying entirely above the Arctic Circle, the area swings between the midnight sun of summer and the long polar twilight of winter, when the aurora borealis is a frequent companion. Reindeer herding, nature tourism and protected wilderness shape daily life, and the surrounding national-park country draws hikers, skiers and aurora-watchers throughout the year.
