OnlinePerched 100 feet above Mission: Wolf, this rugged outcrop crowns a fenced three-acre enclosure built around the rock itself, giving resident wolves a favorite vista point over the Wet Mountain Valley. Shaman's Rock
This rugged granite outcrop rises roughly 100 feet above the valley floor and was the very spot around which Mission: Wolf first took shape, back when staff fenced a three-acre enclosure into its base to give the resident wolves room to roam and climb.
A Favorite Vista Point
Wolves are drawn to high ground, and generations of residents have posed on these rocks overlooking the Wet Mountain Valley โ the view has supplied some of the sanctuary's most iconic photographs, including the banner image on its own website.
Named for an Ambassador
The outcrop honors Shaman, a gray wolf who led the sanctuary's Ambassador Wolf program and helped inspire the creation of Mission: Wolf itself.
A Nonprofit Wolf Refuge
Operated off-grid in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Mission: Wolf provides lifelong sanctuary to captive-born wolves and wolf-dog crosses that cannot survive in the wild, streaming this view in partnership with Explore.org.
