This camera looks out over a cluster of hanging feeders and a covered platform tray mounted on the Learning Center Barn at the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, a fifty-acre sanctuary of native landscapes, trails, and wetlands adjoining Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Tube feeders, a suet cage, and a seed hopper are arranged against a backdrop of mature hardwoods and understory brush.

Songbirds of the Reserve

The station regularly draws chickadees, cardinals, and finches, alongside dozens of other species that pass through the reserve's wild areas over the course of a year. An automated acoustic system linked to the feeder cross-references birdsong picked up by the camera's microphone, building a running record of the site's avian visitors.

A Living Classroom

The feeder is jointly maintained by Saint Vincent College's Department of Biological Sciences and the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, and it doubles as a research tool: undergraduates studying ornithology, wildlife biology, and conservation use the feed to track species diversity and seasonal activity patterns across the reserve's fifty acres.
