The Roof of the Rhön
At 950 metres, the Wasserkuppe is the highest summit in the Rhön low-mountain range and the loftiest point in Hesse. This camera looks west across the broad, treeless plateau toward the rolling hills and farmland of central Germany.
A Cradle of Gliding
The Wasserkuppe is celebrated as the birthplace of gliding, where pioneering soaring flights began in the 1920s. Its open, windswept meadows still host gliders and paragliders riding the thermals above the range.
Plateau and Panorama
In the foreground, picnic benches and grassy paths cross the summit plateau, while the view opens to a vast uninterrupted horizon. The west-facing vantage takes in successive ridgelines and the distant lowlands beyond the range.
