A Working Harbor on Taiwan's North Coast

Wanli Fishing Harbor shelters behind a sturdy breakwater along the rugged shoreline of New Taipei City, one of many small ports that punctuate Taiwan's weather-beaten northern coast. The basin offers safe anchorage to the local fleet, and the camera looks out across the moored boats toward the harbor mouth and the open sea beyond.

The Trawler Fleet

Dozens of fishing trawlers and smaller sampan-style craft pack the harbor, their hulls and rigging mirrored in the calm water. These working vessels supply the seafood markets and restaurants of the region, and the harbor stays busy with crews tending nets, ice and gear between trips out to the rich fishing grounds offshore.

Wanli and Its Coastline

The harbor lies in Wanli District, a coastal stretch famous for its dramatic rock formations, hot springs and nearby surf beaches. Beyond the quay, the lights of the fishing village climb the hillside, framing the port against the green slopes that rise sharply from the shore.
