The Mesoamerican Reef up close
This camera looks out over sandy channels that lead to the reef wall off Utila, the smallest of Honduras's Bay Islands. The hard-coral heads, swaying sea fans and rubble fields belong to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the Atlantic.
A living underwater habitat
The reef shelters an extraordinary cast of marine life. Patient viewers are rewarded with eagle rays and stingrays gliding over the sand, moray eels peering from crevices, and passing sea turtles, sharks, snappers and groupers working the wall.
Diving paradise off Utila
Utila sits on the white-sand south shore of the Bay Islands, long famed as one of the Caribbean's premier dive destinations. The reef rises almost to the beach before plunging more than 120 feet to the ocean floor.
Conservation and research
Hosted by Utopia Village and the EXPLORE.org live-cam network, the feed doubles as a window for marine research and reef conservation, bringing this fragile ecosystem to a worldwide audience in real time.
