A Window onto the Mesoamerican Reef

Set in a sandy channel roughly 320 feet from shore at a depth of about 20 feet, this camera looks toward the reef wall that drops steeply to the ocean floor. It offers a rare, continuous underwater perspective on one of the planet's great barrier reef systems.

A Living Coral Garden

The scene is alive with branching corals, swaying sea fans and sponges anchored to the white-sand bed. This stretch of the Mesoamerican Reef shelters a remarkable density of marine life within a compact field of view.

Marine Encounters

Patient viewers may spot eagle rays and stingrays cruising the channel, moray eels tucked into crevices, sea turtles, reef sharks and shoals of snappers and groupers moving across the sand.

Utila and the Bay Islands

The cam is hosted by Utopia Village on the south shore of Utila, the smallest of Honduras' Bay Islands. Long renowned as a world-class dive destination, the island sits where turquoise Caribbean water meets the reef just steps from the beach.
