An intimate window into the nest

This camera looks directly down into the deep cup of the U. S. Steel bald eagle nest, offering an up-close perspective on the sticks, lining and daily comings and goings of one of western Pennsylvania's best-known eagle pairs. Every feeding, nest rearrangement and eaglet milestone plays out at arm's length.

A nest built on an industrial riverbank

The eagles chose a tall tree on the grounds of the historic Mon Valley Works–Irvin Plant along the Monongahela River, a striking reminder of how wildlife has reclaimed the post-industrial landscape of the Pittsburgh region. The feed streams under a special permit from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

A symbol of conservation

Bald eagles vanished from much of the eastern United States during the twentieth century and have since returned in remarkable numbers. Nests like this one let viewers worldwide follow the species' recovery in real time, from egg to fledgling.
