A Peregrine Nest Box at St Chad's
The St Chad's Peregrine Project installed this nest box high on the church tower in Kirkby, giving a breeding pair of peregrine falcons a secure ledge overlooking the Merseyside skyline. The gravel-lined box mimics the falcons' natural cliff-face eyrie, and the fixed camera keeps a continuous eye on the nest without disturbing the birds.
Raising the Next Generation
Through the breeding season, viewers can watch the resident pair incubate eggs, exchange prey at the nest, and feed newly hatched eyasses until they are ready to fledge. Peregrine falcons are famously the fastest animals alive, capable of diving on prey at extraordinary speed, yet inside the box the scene is calm and domestic.
Urban Conservation in Action
Church towers and other tall structures have become vital substitute cliffs for peregrines across British towns and cities, and the Kirkby project is part of a wider effort to monitor and protect these recovering raptors. The live feed lets bird enthusiasts follow the whole nesting cycle from egg to first flight.
