The Meerkat Mob

This camera looks directly into the meerkat habitat, home to a tight-knit mob of these social mongooses. Native to southern Africa's deserts, meerkats live by cooperation: members take turns as lookout sentinels while others forage and care for pups, making every viewing a small lesson in animal teamwork.

Inside the Enclosure

The exhibit recreates an arid, open-ground environment with deep sand for burrowing, scattered logs and rocks for climbing, and hardy plantings for shade. A large glass viewing wall brings visitors eye-level with the animals, while a tall faux-rock formation anchors one side of the enclosure.

About Shoushan Zoo

Shoushan Zoo sits on the forested slopes of Shoushan (Monkey Mountain) in the Gushan District of Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan. One of the island's major public zoos, it houses a wide range of mammals, birds, and reptiles across naturalistic habitats and is a popular family destination.

What to Watch For

Look for the upright sentinel posture as one meerkat stands guard, the rapid digging sprays of sand as the mob excavates, and the constant social grooming and play. Activity ebbs and flows across the hours, so patience is often rewarded with charming group antics.
