The Settle–Carlisle Line
One of Britain’s great railway engineering achievements, the Settle–Carlisle Line climbs through the remote uplands of the Yorkshire Dales and the northern Pennines. This camera at Horton-in-Ribblesdale looks north along the route toward Ribblehead, capturing trains as they negotiate the dramatic gradients of this historic line.
The Ribblesdale Landscape
The tracks run through the broad, glacially-carved valley of the River Ribble, framed by limestone fells and the celebrated Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Dry-stone walls and open moorland give the scene its unmistakable Dales character.
Trainspotting at Horton
Horton-in-Ribblesdale was among the very first locations on the Railcam network. The view is a favourite of enthusiasts watching for charter steam specials, freight workings and the regular service trains that ply the line between Leeds and Carlisle.
Walking and the Three Peaks
The surrounding country is a magnet for walkers tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, and Horton sits at the traditional start and finish of the route. The railway and the fells together make this a quintessential corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
