A Balcony over the Abruzzo Apennines
This webcam looks out from Ristoro La Foce, perched above Scontrone in the province of L'Aquila. The view sweeps across a broad mountain valley toward the limestone massifs of the Alto Sangro, a landscape of steep ridges, wooded slopes and open pasture typical of Italy's central Apennines.
Scontrone and the Alto Sangro
Scontrone is a small hilltop village guarding the upper Sangro valley, close to the borders of Molise and Lazio. Its medieval stone streets and the surrounding highland terrain make it a natural gateway into one of the wildest corners of the Apennines.
Gateway to a National Park
The peaks on the horizon belong to the wider Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, one of Italy's oldest protected areas and a stronghold for the Marsican brown bear, Apennine wolf and chamois. Beech forests, alpine meadows and dramatic rock walls define this celebrated wilderness.
A Living Weather Window
Operated as part of the Chieti Meteo network, the camera doubles as a real-time weather window on the region's ever-changing mountain skies. It offers a continuous vantage on the seasonal moods of the Abruzzo highlands, from lush green summers to snow-covered winter ridgelines.
