A Vast Tidal Shoreline

At low water the English Channel can withdraw nearly four kilometres from the shore, exposing a vast plain of rippled sand and shellfish beds that has shaped local life for centuries.
Dunes, Sea Walls and the Coast Road
In the foreground, a line of riprap sea defences guards the coastal road that runs the length of the resort. Behind it, low dunes and a cluster of seaside buildings mark the edge of the village, giving the panorama its characteristic blend of natural shoreline and quiet resort life.
Pirou on the Cotentin Peninsula
Pirou is a small commune in the Manche department of Normandy, on the western flank of the Cotentin Peninsula. Its long, open beach faces the English Channel and is renowned among walkers, anglers and shellfish gatherers who follow the rhythm of the tides.
