The View Toward Mt Ruapehu
The camera frames a sweeping outlook from Ohakune across open country toward the massif of Mt Ruapehu. At 2,797 metres it is the highest mountain in the North Island, its broad andesite cone often crowned with snow above the surrounding tussock and farmland.
An Active Volcano
Ruapehu is one of New Zealand's most active stratovolcanoes, with a steaming Crater Lake nestled near its summit. The mountain is sacred to local Māori iwi and forms the dramatic heart of the volcanic Central Plateau.
Ohakune and the Central Plateau
Set on the mountain's southern foot, the town of Ohakune is the gateway to the Tūroa ski field and famous for its market gardens. The wide foreground reveals the rolling pasture and ridgelines of the Ruapehu District.
Tongariro National Park
Ruapehu anchors Tongariro National Park, a dual UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, alpine skiing and year-round mountaineering on its glaciated upper slopes.
