Napier Port Kororā Nest Box

A World-First Port Sanctuary

Napier Port is home to one of the world's only on-site penguin sanctuaries built inside a working harbour, where roughly ninety pairs of kororā nest among the revetment walls and purpose-built boxes. This camera looks straight into one of those boxes, offering a rare, uninterrupted view of nesting behaviour most visitors never see.

Life Inside the Burrow

Kororā are the smallest penguin species on Earth, and pairs are famously faithful to both their partner and their burrow, returning to the same box season after season. Expect to see adults incubating eggs, feeding downy chicks, or simply resting on a bed of grass and soft debris gathered from the surrounding port grounds.

Conservation on an Industrial Wharf

Despite sitting among cranes and container stacks, the sanctuary keeps the birds shielded from dogs, cats, and human disturbance, letting the colony thrive in an otherwise unlikely setting. The livestream, named "Keeping Up With the Kororā," lets the public follow the same nest without ever stepping near it.
