A Purpose-Built Bat Roost

This top-view infrared camera looks straight down into a custom three-chamber bat box mounted on a barn at the Westmoreland Land Trust's Meadowlark Nature and Art Park. The narrow wooden slats seen edge-on form the roosting slots where a colony of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) rests during daylight hours.

Conservation in Focus

The bat box was built alongside cameras inside the historic barn itself, giving researchers and viewers a rare side-by-side view of how the colony moves between a traditional roost and a supplemental habitat designed to support the population as it grows.

Why Bats Matter

Big brown bats are voracious insect hunters, and this feed from the Meadowlark Nature and Art Park in Westmoreland County highlights the ecological value of a species that faces pressure from habitat loss and disease, supporting public education about a frequently misunderstood mammal.
