This dual-camera bat box was purpose-built and mounted on the barn at the Meadowlark Nature and Art Park, a 96-acre property conserved by the Westmoreland Land Trust near Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The structure gives the resident colony a safe, supplemental roosting site alongside the barn's natural crevices, while this camera watches the single narrow gap the bats use to come and go.

Meet the Big Brown Bat

The Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) is a sturdy, wide-ranging North American species known for its broad, leathery wings and its habit of roosting in small, tight-knit colonies inside barns, boxes, and building crevices. Individuals cling to wood and to each other, forming the dense clusters that make roost cameras like this one so captivating to watch.

Nature's Pest Controllers

A single Big Brown Bat can consume thousands of insects in one outing, making the colony a powerful, chemical-free ally for the surrounding meadows and farmland. Their exits through this gap are part of a broader insect-control service that benefits the whole park ecosystem, from pollinator meadows to nearby crops.

A Living Conservation Classroom
