A Sanctuary for Rescued Bears
The Libearty Bear Sanctuary near Zărnești, in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, is home to more than a hundred brown bears rescued from cramped cages, disused zoos, and roadside attractions. Run by the Asociația Milioane de Prieteni (AMP) together with international animal-welfare partners, it is one of the largest bear sanctuaries in Europe.
Life After Captivity
Freed from decades of confinement, the resident bears now roam across dozens of hectares of forested hillside, complete with dens, streams, and bathing ponds like the one shown here. Caretakers monitor their physical and behavioral recovery as the animals rediscover natural instincts such as foraging, digging, and swimming.
A Window into Conservation Work
This live camera offers a rare, unobtrusive view of the sanctuary's bathing pool, where bears cool off and play throughout the day. It is part of a broader effort by wildlife-protection organizations to document and share the ongoing rehabilitation of animals once exploited for entertainment.
