A Medieval Fortress Above the Mountain Pass
Set 25 kilometres southwest of Brașov in the village of Bran, the castle guards a historic gateway between Transylvania and Wallachia. The first wooden stronghold here was raised by the Teutonic Order, and the surviving stone castle — completed in 1388 — commanded one of the region's most important commercial routes through the Carpathians.
The Dracula Legend
Bran owes its global fame to Bram Stoker's novel, whose description of Dracula's Castle echoes this fortress—even though the author never visited Transylvania. Most historians agree the Wallachian voivode Vlad the Impaler never set foot inside, yet the mythical association draws visitors from every corner of the world.
Architecture and Setting
From this vantage point the castle's asymmetric towers, steep red roofs and pale walls stand out against a backdrop of dense Carpathian forest. The surrounding ridges and the deep Bran Gorge give the monument its brooding, fairy-tale character that has made it a defining image of Romania.
A Living Museum
Today a national monument, Bran operates as a museum open to visitors from across the globe. The camera, hosted by Casa din Bran, lets you follow the comings and goings around this UNESCO-worthy landmark and its storybook Transylvanian surroundings.
