A warlord's fortress reborn
Fukuchiyama Castle began as a strategic stronghold built by Akechi Mitsuhide, the general famed for his role in the fall of Oda Nobunaga. The current tenshu is a faithful 1986 reconstruction that recaptures the silhouette of the original keep.
The hilltop silhouette
From this vantage the white plastered walls and dark tiled roofs of the donjon command the skyline, perched on massive nozura-zumi dry-stone ramparts that step down the hill. The wooded approach and the ringed moat frame one of the region's signature views.
Heart of historic Fukuchiyama
The castle anchors a city rich in Mitsuhide heritage, from the Goryo Shrine that venerates him to the flood-control embankments he is said to have engineered. The keep houses a local history museum at the center of Fukuchiyama's identity.
A landmark of northern Kyoto
Set inland from the Sea of Japan coast, Fukuchiyama is a gateway between the Sea of Kyoto and Forest of Kyoto tourism regions. The castle park draws visitors year-round and remains the city's most recognisable emblem.
