A Window into Condor Recovery

This camera offers a rare, unobstructed look inside an active California Condor nest, one of the most endangered birds in North America. Managed by the Ventana Wildlife Society, the feed is part of a decades-long effort to return the species to the wild along the central California coast.

The Nesting Cavity

The nest sits within a hollowed, fire-hardened redwood snag, its charred interior lined with wood chips and debris. The natural cavity shelters eggs and chicks from the elements, mirroring the wild nesting sites condors have used for millennia.

Big Sur Wilderness

Framed by coastal conifers and tangled branches, the setting captures the wild character of the Big Sur backcountry. This stretch of the rugged Pacific coastline provides the isolation and updrafts these enormous soaring birds depend on.

Conservation in Action

Since 1997 the Ventana Wildlife Society has released captive-bred condors to the region, and live cams like this one let scientists and the public monitor the recovery of a species that once neared extinction.
