A Flock at Ground Level

This camera offers a ground-level view inside the flight pen at the Ventana Wildlife Society's Condor Sanctuary, where several California Condors can often be seen gathered together on wooden perches, mesh platforms, and the pen floor. Unlike the sanctuary's overhead angles, this vantage captures the birds' massive size and social interactions up close.

Guardians of an Endangered Giant

North America's largest flying bird nearly disappeared in the twentieth century, and the sanctuary's ongoing captive-release program remains central to the species' recovery along the central California coast. Staff use feeds like this one to monitor bird health, social hierarchy, and readiness for eventual release into the wild.

A Rugged Big Sur Backdrop

Beyond the enclosure's mesh walls, dense stands of redwood and pine climb a steep hillside that forms part of the vast Los Padres National Forest surrounding the sanctuary. The remote, rugged terrain typifies the wild stretch of coastline the condors call home.
