A Temple at the End of an Alley
Cihou Temple began as a small home shrine in Jiutang, a village in Kaohsiung's Dashu District, before growing too popular for its original space. Devotees purchased land nearby to build a proper hall, and because the site sat at the very end of a narrow lane, the resident Mazu became known across the district as the "Alley Mazu".
The Pineapple Mazu
The temple's Mazu statue was brought from Taipei's De Xing Temple as a branch deity of the renowned Beigang Chaotian Temple, and pilgrims traditionally carried Dashu's famous pineapples as pilgrimage offerings on each incense-gathering trip โ earning the goddess the affectionate nickname "Pineapple Mazu".
Inside the Main Hall
The camera frames the temple's gilded central shrine, where carved wooden panels, red lanterns, and an incense burner surround statues of Mazu and her attendant generals. Fresh flowers and offerings are placed before the altar as part of the hall's daily devotional routine.
A Digital Place of Worship
The livestream is part of a digital cultural preservation initiative that lets devotees who cannot travel to Dashu still take part in the temple's rituals from afar, keeping the "Alley Mazu" connected to her wider community of followers.
