The black panther is not a distinct species but a striking color variant caused by melanism, an excess of dark pigment found in both jaguars and leopards. At Zoo Negara this dramatic coat lets the resident cat blend seamlessly into the shadows of its rocky den, a favorite retreat.

A Naturalistic Habitat

The enclosure recreates a forest den with tumbled boulders, timber climbing structures, and dense greenery, giving the panther plenty of shaded hideaways and enrichment features that encourage natural resting and stalking behavior.
