Greenland

Towns Between Ice and Sea

Fewer than 60,000 people live in Greenland, almost all of them on the ice-free west and southwest coasts. The capital, Nuuk, sits at the mouth of a vast fjord system, and its harbour cameras show fishing boats and supply ships against the mountains. On the east coast, Tasiilaq and Kulusuk face the Denmark Strait.

Runways at the Edge of the Ice

For most of the year, planes and helicopters are the only way between towns. Kangerlussuaq, a former American air base at the head of a long fjord, close to the edge of the ice sheet, was the main international gateway until Nuuk's new runway opened in 2024. The airports of Sisimiut, Ilulissat and Narsarsuaq sit between fjord and rock, and their cameras show weather that can close a runway within minutes.

Midnight Sun and Polar Night

North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for weeks around June, and in winter it barely rises. The cameras then catch the deep blue of the polar night and, on clear evenings, the green curtains of the northern lights.
