The Coastal Marsh

The camera surveys a broad expanse of salt marsh laced with meandering tidal creeks, a habitat that shifts with every rise and fall of the water. Cordgrass and spartina flats give the scene its signature green-and-silver texture.

The Intracoastal Waterway

Beyond the grass runs the Intracoastal Waterway, the sheltered navigable channel that carries recreational boats and working craft along the Carolina coast between the mainland and the barrier islands.

The Causeway to the Island

A low causeway bridge spans the waterway, connecting Sunset Beach town to its barrier-island shore. It is the single gateway that visitors cross to reach the beach.

Wildlife & the Estuary

The estuary is alive with coastal birds — herons, egrets and pelicans work the shallows, while the rich mudflats nurse the shellfish and small fish that anchor this stretch of the Carolina coast.
