Usk Valley Osprey Nest

A Rare Osprey Nest in South Wales

This osprey nest platform stands high above the Usk Valley, watched over by the Usk Valley Ospreys project in partnership with the Welsh Government. It is the only camera-monitored osprey nest in South Wales, giving a close and continuous view of a breeding pair as they defend their territory and raise their young above the treeline.

Life Above the Valley

Built from a tangle of sturdy branches, the nest sits within a working arable and pasture landscape where fields, hedgerows and the River Usk provide rich hunting grounds. Ospreys are migratory raptors, returning each year from West Africa to the same nest site, and the camera captures every stage of their return — from courtship displays to the steady rhythm of incubation and feeding.

Conservation Within Bannau Brycheiniog

The nest lies within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (formerly the Brecon Beacons), one of Wales's most treasured protected landscapes. Ospreys were once absent from Wales for over a century, and their return as a breeding species is one of the country's most significant conservation achievements, drawing researchers and birdwatchers alike to follow the nest's progress.

An Educational Window Into a Protected Species

The Usk Valley Ospreys project uses this feed to support public education and ornithological research, sharing footage responsibly while keeping the exact nest site undisturbed. Viewers can observe natural parental behaviour in real time, from nest maintenance to the fledging of chicks, without any interference with the wild birds.
