Tsuruga Station is the rail gateway to Tsuruga, a port city on Wakasa Bay long tied to the Sea of Japan trade routes. The West Exit plaza is the traveller's first impression of the city, a wide civic forecourt organised around taxi lanes, pick-up bays and pedestrian walkways.

Tsuruga is a key junction where the Hokuriku Main Line meets connections toward Kyoto and the wider Kansai region, and the arrival of the Hokuriku Shinkansen has renewed the area around the station. The plaza reflects that role as a busy interchange for the surrounding Reinan district.
