Stork Pond at Kozubszczyzna Sanctuary
OnlineThis shallow bathing pond sits at the heart of the Kozubszczyzna stork sanctuary, its sloped wooden ramps letting recovering white storks wade in and out at their own pace. Birds too injured to migrate gather around the water's edge to drink, preen, and cool off, framed by the wheat fields and windbreak trees of rural Lublin.

A Pond Built for Flightless Storks
The Kozubszczyzna rehabilitation center, run by a Polish nonprofit dedicated to helping injured white storks, dug this shallow pond so birds that will never fly again still have open water to bathe in. Gently sloped wooden ramps replace the steep banks a healthy stork could simply fly over.
Ramps, Not Wings
Wooden walkways lead straight into the water, letting storks with damaged wings or missing feet step down to the shoreline instead of needing to launch themselves. It is a small piece of purpose-built infrastructure that keeps grounded birds from being cut off from something as basic as a drink.
Nest Platforms in View
Beyond the pond, woven nest platforms mounted on poles line the far side of the enclosure, home to resident pairs that raise chicks without ever needing to reach a rooftop. The camera keeps both the water and the nests in the same frame.
Rural Lublin Backdrop
Beyond the sanctuary fence, the view opens onto farmhouses and open fields typical of the Lublin Voivodeship countryside, a quiet rural setting just outside the city of Lublin itself.
