A Living African Penguin Colony
This camera looks out over the African Penguin breeding colony at Stony Point, beside the village of Betty's Bay. Once home to barely a hundred pairs, the colony has grown into one of the fastest-expanding mainland populations of the species, with thousands of birds nesting among the boulders and coastal scrub.
Stony Point Nature Reserve
The reserve protects a rugged ribbon of the Overberg coastline, where wave-polished granite meets fynbos-clad slopes. Wooden boardwalks let visitors approach the colony without disturbing it, and the same vantage the camera shares reveals tide pools, kelp beds and the open water beyond.
Wildlife of the Rocky Shore
Beyond the penguins, the rocks host rock hyrax (dassies) basking in the open, while cormorants, gulls and other seabirds work the shoreline. The colony is a busy crossroads of coastal life on the southern Cape.
An Endangered Species
The African Penguin is classified as Endangered, and mainland strongholds like Stony Point are vital to its survival. Watching the colony helps draw attention to the conservation of South Africa's coastal ecosystems.
