A Refuge for the African Penguin
Stony Point Nature Reserve shelters the world's third-largest breeding colony of African Penguins, a species found only along the coasts of southern Africa. Sitting on the site of an old whaling station, the reserve has helped this endangered seabird recover, hosting roughly 1,600 breeding pairs that nest among the granite boulders.
A Rocky Coastal Bay
The camera overlooks a sheltered cove of weathered granite outcrops and a small sandy beach, where the clear Atlantic water reveals the rocks and kelp below. This is the bay where the penguins enter the sea, swimming and porpoising before clambering back ashore.
A Wider Seabird Community
Three cormorant species, the Crowned, Cape and Bank cormorant, breed on the outer rocks alongside Hartlaub's and Kelp Gulls. Rock Hyrax, the small dassie, often appear on the surrounding stones.
Betty's Bay and the Overberg Coast
The reserve lies in the coastal town of Betty's Bay, set against the rugged Overberg shoreline of the Western Cape. It is a protected stretch of pristine South African coast, a haven for wildlife between the mountains and the open ocean.
