This camera looks straight into a nesting box deep in the forest of De Mortel, a wooden cavity that doubles as a squirrel hotel and a breeding box for owls. The lens captures the dense lining of twigs and pine needles packed into the chamber, a hand-built haven for the small mammals and birds of the surrounding woodland.

Resident Wildlife

Agile red squirrels use the box as a den, while a pair of tawny owls has returned to nest here for several years in a row. The feed switches to whichever chamber the owls choose, offering an unusually close window onto the breeding cycle, from incubation to fledging.

The box sits within a managed stretch of Dutch woodland in the province of North Brabant, a habitat of mixed conifers and broadleaf trees that supports a wide range of European wildlife. Audio accompanies the picture, carrying the calls and rustles of the forest into the chamber.
