The Nest Box

This stream looks directly into a barn owl nest box mounted high in the rafters of a farmer's barn. The infrared camera renders the timber chamber in soft monochrome, capturing every movement of the resident owls without disturbing them.

A Master of Silent Flight

The barn owl (Tyto alba) is one of Europe's most widespread yet rarely seen raptors, hunting voles and field mice across the surrounding farmland with near-silent wingbeats. Its heart-shaped facial disc channels sound to extraordinarily sensitive ears.

Breeding Season

Across the breeding cycle the box hosts courtship, incubation, hatching, and fledging. In years rich with prey a pair may lay a large clutch and even raise a second or third brood, making each season a different story.

The Setting

The host barn sits in De Rips, a quiet farming village in the municipality of Gemert-Bakel within the province of North Brabant, a landscape of fields and hedgerows that provides ideal hunting ground for these remarkable birds.
