A Wild Haul-Out on the Inside Passage
This camera looks out over a natural haul-out on Hanson Island, a remote, forested island deep in British Columbia's Inside Passage. Dozens of sea lions gather on the weathered rock to rest between foraging trips, forming a constantly shifting tapestry of bodies along the tide line.
The Steller Sea Lions of the Salish Sea
The colony is dominated by Steller sea lions, among the largest of all eared seals, whose deep guttural calls carry across the channel. Visitors may catch the animals swimming, hauling out, or sparring over the best sun-warmed ledges of the volcanic shoreline.
OrcaLab and the explore.org Network
The feed is operated by explore.org, the world's largest live nature-cam network, in partnership with the legendary OrcaLab research station founded to study the region's orcas. The site sits within one of the planet's richest marine ecosystems.
A Window into Coastal Wildlife
Beyond the sea lions, the surrounding waters of the Johnstone Strait region host orcas, humpback whales, eagles and seabirds, making this rugged stretch of Pacific coast a front-row seat to one of North America's great wildlife gatherings.
