A Research Nest Box in the Appalachian Woods

This camera looks inside Owl Box 8, one of nine specially built screech owl nest boxes spread across a ten-acre, rural stretch of southwestern Pennsylvania. The boxes are part of a long-running study into the Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio), a small, camouflaged woodland raptor recognizable by its compact frame and feathered ear tufts.

Inside the Wooden Tunnel

The lens sits deep within the box, framing a weathered timber passage that opens onto a soft floor of bedding and cached debris. Screech owls favor tight, enclosed cavities like this one for shelter and for storing food, making the box a natural extension of the hollow trees they would otherwise seek out in the wild.

A Year of Owl Behavior

Across the seasons the box serves different purposes: a sheltered spot for roosting and stashing prey through the colder months, then a nursery once a pair chooses it for courtship and nesting. Viewers may catch glimpses of incubation, hatching, and the gradual growth of downy owlets inside this rarely seen space.

Remote-Controlled Outdoor Viewing

A companion pan-tilt-zoom camera mounted outside lets the research team and viewers follow the owls as they perch, preen, or survey the surrounding woodland near the box entrance, adding an external perspective to the enclosed nest-box view.
