Schlüttsiel Halligen Ferry Harbour
OnlineThe historic Schlüttsiel ferry harbour is the gateway to Germany's remote Halligen islands, framed by the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea. The MS Hilligenlei, the iconic Halligen ferry, departs from this quay toward Hooge and Langeneß, while crab cutters and sailboats from the Dagebüll-Schlüttsiel yacht club animate the harbor basin. On the horizon, the islands of Langeneß, Oland, and Föhr rise from the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's largest unbroken tidal ecosystems.

Gateway to the Halligen Islands
Schlüttsiel's ferry harbour sits at the northern edge of the Ockholm coast, where dry land gives way to the tidal flats of the Wadden Sea. This small port is the mainland's principal link to the isolated Halligen — unembanked islets that flood regularly with the tide — making it a working gateway rather than a tourist pier.
The MS Hilligenlei
The harbor's landmark vessel, the MS Hilligenlei, operated by the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei, threads the shallow Wattenmeer channels to reach the Halligen of Hooge and Langeneß. Its comings and goings, tracked live via the onscreen ferry schedule, set the working rhythm of the harbor basin below.
A Working Fishing & Sailing Harbor
Alongside the ferry route, Schlüttsiel shelters a small fleet of crab cutters, excursion boats, and the sailboats of the Yacht Club Dagebüll-Schlüttsiel. The Hafengesellschaft Dagebüll maintains the modest quay infrastructure that keeps this working harbor running.
Views Across the Wadden Sea
Looking west across open water, the camera frames the UNESCO World Heritage tidal flats and, on the horizon, the silhouettes of the Halligen islands Langeneß and Oland, together with the larger island of Föhr — a panorama unique to this stretch of the North Frisian coast.
