A Legendary Railroad Grade
Sand Patch Grade is a celebrated stretch of the former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad mainline, climbing through the Allegheny Mountains at milepost 207.89. Now operated by CSX, the line carries a steady procession of heavy freight consists tackling one of the steepest sustained grades in the eastern United States.
The Mance Horseshoe Curve
The camera frames the sweeping horseshoe curve at Mance, where westbound trains climb toward Sand Patch Tunnel and eastbound trains descend toward Cumberland. The dramatic bend lets viewers watch the full length of a train as it wraps around the ridge in a single shot.
The Historic Mance Post Office
In the foreground stands the Mance Post Office, a hand-hewn hemlock structure believed to date to the American Civil War era. It served as an official U.S. Post Office from 1892 to 1928 and has been lovingly restored by local craftsmen, preserving a rare piece of Appalachian railroad heritage.
