A Coastal Release Site
This camera overlooks the field pen at the Ventana Wildlife Society's Condor Sanctuary near San Simeon, on California's rugged central coast. Since 2015 the site has served as a second release point for captive-bred California Condors, complementing the Society's original program in Big Sur.
A Lifeline Free of Lead
Staff place carcasses of stillborn domestic calves just outside the pen, giving newly released and wild condors a reliable, lead-free food source โ a critical safeguard for a species long threatened by lead poisoning from spent ammunition. A perimeter fence keeps bears and coyotes away from the feeding area.
Shared Skies with Other Raptors
Beyond the condors, the sanctuary regularly draws bald eagles, golden eagles, turkey vultures, and ravens, all part of the rich scavenger community along this stretch of coast. Golden eagles occasionally spar with condors at the carcass site, though such encounters rarely cause serious harm.
