Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street District

A living slice of old Kyoto

The Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street District is one of Japan's designated Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings, safeguarding a rare stretch of rural townscape at the northwestern edge of the city. Rows of wooden machiya, earthen walls and thatched farmhouses line the gently rising lane, framed by the wooded slopes of the surrounding mountains.

The road to Atago Shrine

The district takes its name from the torii gate that marks the approach to Atago Shrine, long a place of pilgrimage for protection against fire. Traditional teahouses, craft shops and small temples such as Nenbutsu-ji and Adashino Nenbutsu-ji sit along the route, giving the quarter its contemplative, timeworn character.

Architecture worth preserving

Two distinct building styles coexist here: the merchant machiya of the lower district and the agricultural thatched houses of the upper slopes. Deep eaves, lattice windows and stone-paved paths reward close viewing, offering a window onto how a temple-gate community once looked and lived.
