A Former Imperial Palace

Daikakuji Temple traces its origins to the detached palace of Emperor Saga in the early ninth century, later converted into a Buddhist temple. As a monzeki temple, it was long headed by members of the imperial family, and its refined halls preserve the elegant aesthetics of Japan's Heian-era court.

The Osawa Pond and Saga Landscape

Adjoining the temple is the Osawa Pond, one of the oldest surviving garden ponds in Japan, modeled on Chinese scenic lakes. The surrounding Saga countryside, at the foot of the western hills, has inspired poets and painters for centuries.
