Sacred Heart Basilica High Altar

A Masterpiece of Sacred Architecture

Built between 1909 and 1921 to a design by Franciszek Mączyński, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus blends Art Nouveau, Neo-Romanesque and Byzantine elements. The view reveals towering marble columns, a richly decorated apse and the central dome that gives the interior its cathedral-like scale.

The High Altar and Sacred Heart

At the heart of the frame stands the white-stone high altar, presided over by a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Side altars, devotional paintings and wrought ironwork frame the sanctuary, reflecting the Jesuit craftsmanship that shaped one of Kraków's finest twentieth-century churches.
