A Brunel Masterpiece Over the Tamar
Completed in 1859, the Royal Albert Bridge was the last major work of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Its two great wrought-iron bowstring trusses, each resting on a central stone pier, still carry the Cornish Main Line across the tidal River Tamar exactly as they did more than a century and a half ago.
Two Bridges, One View
This webcam frames the railway bridge alongside its modern neighbor, the Tamar road suspension bridge, giving viewers a striking comparison of Victorian and contemporary engineering sharing the same crossing point between Plymouth and Saltash.
A Living Rail Gateway to Cornwall
Every train linking Cornwall to the rest of the British rail network rumbles across these trusses, making the bridge a working monument as much as a historic landmark, with a steady procession of passenger and freight services crossing its span.
