An Intimate Den View

This infrared camera is mounted inside the wooden nest box used by Lucy and Zhu, the resident red pandas at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo. Lined with straw bedding and rough-cut planks, the enclosed den gives these solitary, tree-dwelling mammals a snug retreat away from their open-air habitat.

Red Pandas Up Close

Red pandas are an endangered species native to the Himalayas and southwestern China, prized for their ringed tails and thick reddish coats. This close-range angle reveals grooming, curling, and denning behavior that is nearly impossible to observe from the zoo's outdoor viewing paths.

A Working School Zoo

The nest box sits within the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo, a small accredited zoo on the campus of Millbrook School in New York's Hudson Valley. Founded in 1936, it is the only zoo of its kind based at a high school and is home to dozens of species alongside its two red panda ambassadors.

What to Watch For

Look for the pandas curled into a tight ball against the straw, grooming their bushy tails, or shifting position across the wooden platform. Their distinctive markings stand out clearly against the enclosure's rough-hewn timber.
